I have some .max files from a video game I play and I was wondering if it’s possible to convert them to .stl . Anyone know of a free or cheap program to do this, or anyone that would be willing to use a copy of 3ds max to convert the five files for me?
Try Blender http://www.blender.org it can read .max files and export as STL.
@Daniel_Porter I’m not seeing the open or import being an option for reading max. is there another way I need to bring it in to blender?
@Nathan_O_Kane I know it can import 3D Studio Max files, what I didn’t realise was that that was the .3ds file, not the .max. I’m not sure if there is a trial version of Max you could download to convert them. Or maybe if someone could convert it for you? Beyond that, not sure…
Sorry about the false hope
Note that 3d models developed for video rendering are often not suitable for 3d printing. Video only requires surfaces, not depth, thickness, or true “water tight” solids. Video can get away with a much lower resolution / polygon count in models than what is needed for a decent print.
@Daniel_Porter No problem. I appreciate your willingness to help!
@Danny_Thorpe I figured that I would have to do some cleanup. I was hoping to try and not start from scratch. Thanks for the input!
I have looked, but I usually check meshlab.
