I haven’t found it in this community so forgive me if I bring up a previous topic. I’m trying to get into beginner 3d printing and keep seeing ads for the little M3D. Is this a good starter unit?
No
All depends on what you want to do and the price point u want to spend. M3D is an entry printer and going to be limited in what u can print not only based on print volume but also useable filaments.
They don’t have a heated bed and use a similar buildtak for bed adhesion. Take a look on Adafruit as the Ruiz Brothers have reviewed the printer for some time and have some good pointers.
Based on being ur first printer I also recommend taking a look at Printrbot. The Play is around the same price but has the option for some nice upgrades. Heated bed, larger print volume, exotic filaments just to name a few.
Thanks everyone! Looks like it’s better to save some more cash and go for a Printrbot kit. Unless anyone here has upgraded and wants to sell theirs.
Elliot check eBay sometimes u can find some good deals on a second hand unit otherwise I’m sure pb is going to have a sale soon
I’m not a huge fan of the M3D. They seem slow and for the money don’t give that impressive of a build volume. A printer like a Printrbot Play is slightly more difficult to get setup but prints faster and really really well.
Adafruit did a little piece on the Printrbot Play… They seem to like it

Of course, seeing as this community is more or less moderated by Printrbot there might be a little bias
But in all seriousness there have been a lot of good reviews on the net.
@Elliott_Parfitt I am totally biased! I don’t moderate- I honestly don’t know if I am a moderator, funny enough. but I do try to add Printrbot news and other interesting stuff. I certainly don’t want to appear as a salesman. I hate the whole salesman thing and am pretty bad at it. I try to be truly honest about my products and projects bug my enthusiasm may come off as sales, I guess.
I think there is good bunch of folks here with good things to say. I am especially proud of how helpful people are to newbies and people having problems.
Don’t let my apparent heavy hand stop you from participating. Everyone is biased, when you get down too it. I expect people to call me out if I get out of line.

Printrbot
@Elliott_Parfitt the community is def not moderated by Printrbot, but there are allot of users here that have used them in the past. I’ve owned many printers and built many custom but I’ve alway loved what Printrbot has done for the 3D Community. From having a monthly filament club to using a conductive probe to remove the hassle of manually leveling the bed.
This being ur first Printer the biggest thing u want to make sure is that there is a community around the product you purchase as 3D printing would not be were it is today if it was not for the collective minds of the community. Also having a place to go and ask questions when u get stumped helps progress ones love for taking an idea and seeing it evolve layer by layer.
@Brook_Drumm you’re great. You are a moderator but I can tell you believe in your products and I appreciate this whole community being here with helpful information for a beginner.
