I just get myself a new printrboard, I plan to power it up with a 12V 6amp laptop adapter, but not sure how I would connect it to my laptop, Is it safe if I just solder it to the molex cable?
also, another newb question, how do I use 2 fan? do I just solder it together and plug it into 1 connector in the board? is it safe and enough power?
Thanks guys!
Whether it’s safe or not, I’d recommend a plugin type anyway, just to make swapping out the power adapter easier. Laptop power adapters go bad so easily.
We have a little power dongle just for that. I use a Y motor splitter to run fan power to two fans. Watch your polarity closely and especially current! Overdrive or reverse polarity and you will release the smoke! Poof.
Okay, if you are using more then one heater (2 hot ends or a hot ends and a hot bed) your laptop power supply will probably not be enough. If you get the polarity correct, I am not sure which color is positive in your drawing, then it will work.
As for the fans, you can wire them in parallel, both connected to the same source, but if the source is not rated to handle the power, (I don’t know want size fans you are using, I am assuming they are reasonable) you could damage the printer board…
That’s only 72 watts, the ATX power supply that comes with most of the kits/options are 450 watts or higher… eBay your laptop PSU and get a 450 watt ATX… and then you don’t have to worry about cables.
