I just installed Windows 10,

@Charles_Wright you don’t need to download Security Essentials on 8.1 up it comes built in, it’s been working fine for me.

Windows 10 also drops Media Center. (I use it on my HTPC.)

@Ken_Wagnitz mediaportal is very good, has good live TV support out of the box and awesome plugins.

@Liam_Jackson -On the basis of your comment, I installed Media Portal 2. Oh, I needed DirectX9c. Installed that. Run up MP2. No setup menu, no TV input, (Windows) menu items differ from the documentation. Need to install some TV plugins.
I love the way people come up with alternatives to Media Center, which just don’t do what it does with ease.
So I put MP2 and its mates in the same category as 3D printers, ie for geeks who are prepared to put in the hard work to get a satisfactory result. (Especially so for a Linux HTPC solution.)
I respectfully suggest that most Windows users aren’t in the geek category. For them, Media Center just works. Not perfect, but functional.
You have to wonder what other surprises Windows10 has in store for us.
Sorry, about the hijacking of this thread.

@Ken_Wagnitz mediaportal 2 is pretty alpha. I’d use whatever the latest official release is, 1.12? http://www.team-mediaportal.com/mediaportal-download

I can’t think of anything media centre does that mediaportal doesn’t do out of the box. Plugins just enhance things.

There’s a settings program for configuring mediaportal outside of the main program, because setting anything up with a 10-foot interface and remote is annoying! Also really good wiki guides for setting up anything exactly how you want it.

@Dag_Hovland I see solitare in my start menu… Is this something different? https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipP3ZRdoQvxjI-5tw4bO7t0LAGAmx5R84UZpjwsjTnt4q4YK2fJqs1WgZTfcwvueeQ?key=WlhFX1JJLXhpaXFkaHFyNmI2OGFsNTB1Smp3aXln

@Ken_Wagnitz Microsoft has made some really good moves, but also some really strange ones.

May I ask, what did you use media center for? I’ve never used it, I think the case must be the same for most users.

@Ken_Wagnitz I am guessing that microsoft plans to have much more third party support in the future, they plan on third party “apps” to fill in many gaps. Hopefully the app collection grows fast with the flood of users coming from 8 and 7 creating a demand on the developers.

I use Windows Media Center for recording & viewing off-air TV, as well as playing DVDs, videos and music ripped off my CDs, along with viewing photos. It does it all. Not brilliantly, but well enough, with an easy setup and user-interface.
Microsoft haven’t supported WMC since Windows XP. It came with Vista & Win7. Had to be purchased with Win 8.1 pro. They now don’t think enough people use it to warrant ongoing development. I doubt they’ll produce an app to replace it.
I tried Media Portal years ago, and various other apps since, especially on Linux. They all fall down on the TV side of things.
In Australia the TV guide info comes off air. WMC copes with that. It can record TV series. All the US-centric programs expect to get guide info from a file or the Internet.
Most people don’t even know WMC exists, because it is Media Player that is the default player, with an icon on the taskbar. WMC is better than WMP. (For files it can’t handle, I use VLC on Windows.)

Windows 10 is not going to ship with media center (from what I have been told/read). However, it will be able to be purchased as an add on.

@Keith_Applegarth that is contrary to what I’ve read. Can you quote a source?

It was on the beta test website at MS.

Wrong.

“Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10 and won’t be available after upgrading to Windows 10.”

That’s what I said. It is not in Windows 10. If you want it, you’d have to purchase it separately.

Well that’s a shame. Hopefully a third party developer will make an app that will fill that gap.

I wonder if I should do the #Windows10 upgrade . Worried that I would have problems with my 3D printing software. Like Pronterface & Repetier Host.

@Vaughan_Lundin if you have trouble with it, then just install the software that you used before.

I have installed Cura, Slic3r and Repetier on window 10 and all work fine.

Thanks guys , so i go ahead with it.
