I know it’s blasting from the past, but I’m failing to find a simple solution to my minor issue…
I want to flash 16/20 dumb LEDs and have fading, on the attiny85, but I can’t find (don’t have the ability) to get it working with the 74hc595, tpic6b595, pca9685 and the tlc5940.
I seem to remember the early editions of fastspi having 74hc595 support?
I took out support for the 595 years ago - or, rather, when I rewrote the librero I didn’t bring over 595 support (or anything that required running a timer interrupt). I haven’t gotten around to putting in tlc5940 support yet.
Do you remember which library version had some 595 support? I think I have all the versions somewhere! 
Fading dumb LEDs is a lot harder than I thought it would be… I’ve been relying too much on fastled!
FastSPI_LED is what has it - when I switched over to FastLED was when I yanked it all out - which I think was even before the move to github.
