I like to create models,

I like to create models, is it possible 3d printers could be the tool to make parts for model cars, airplanes, railroads, etc?

Yes.

Could I use it to even make hearing and such for the remote control models?

What is a “hearing” ?

I meant gearing, spell checkers suck

Not as precise as cast parts. Have a look in the OpenRC community, and see what they’re been able to achieve.

I know people who have made gears with extruder-based printers. They have to be large because the surface texture is rough, and they don’t wear well. (And by ‘large’ I mean several centimeters across.) However, I also know people who have printed wing ribs and done very well. If you print them flat you get a nearly perfect smooth surface along the streamline.

Was thinking of.making rc cars first, much easier than planes and helicopters
Thanks for info.

Great for frames and body panels. Too brittle for suspension, I suspect. Don’t get clever and make exact-dimension holes and press in metal sleeves: PLA and ABS fail under tensions so they’ll split. With PLA, you can press in 0.1mm undersize metal sleeves if you heat them up in boiling water first; the PLA will contract and stick to them and then you have a nicely bonded high-stress bearing joint to take your point loads.

Thanks, I would love (for obvious reasons) to get a 64 Austin-Healy rc car. Even if I have to make it myself. Haven’t even decided in scale yet, but it would be a fun build.
