I love this idea. This is what should build our moon/mars/etc. colonies.

I had the idea of trying to put a cartesian mechanism on a hexapod to build massive structures, but this is really cool! Still trying to work out how it’s not falling off!

I believe there are wheels that fold down from the body to grip the sides once there is something for them to grab onto.

Another idea I’ve been working on is a bot with a rack-and pinion Z axis, and it prints the rack as it goes, so that it climbs its own print as it builds it.

Interesting, the layers below have hardened enough to support the weight. The vertical climbing is also very cool http://www.adafruit.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Pasted_Image_6_26_14_8_48_AM1.jpg

Maybe another position system shoul work, but with wheels and needing a material pipe supported by a higher structure … I think his versatility is quite limited …

I’d love to see how they make a 90 degree corner … ;-D

@Liam_Jackson I also dream of a FFF printing hexapod on occasion. My thought was to put a bowden extruder off the tail and make a sort of scorpion.

Of course the trouble with all these ideas is that they can’t lug material around.

I saw a SCARA arm mounted on a little RC cart in the MIT media lab once. No idea if they ever got it to work but their plan was to graffiti some public areas with little (easily removed) 3d prints.
