I might do this upgrade

I used the volcano configuration instead, then no spacer is required. Still needs wiring mods, of course. I ordered the appropriate connectors to mate with the stock Simple Metal connectors so no permanent changes to the printer.
what is the volcano configuration?
Here’s a link to the genuine E3D Volcano: http://e3d-online.com/E3D-v6/Volcano/V6-VOLCANO-POWER-PACK-175-UNIVERSAL-12V
I used the Chinese knockoff off equivalent from Ebay, because I wasn’t sure it was going to work. Works well, so when this one breaks, I will buy a real E3D. I will try to remember to post a picture of my setup later. Basically, the longer length puts the hotend into the normal adjustment range of the printer.
I have the real E3D that I purchased in june 2016 to do the upgrade. Looks like I will start the project.
I did this upgrade, well worth it!
OK, here’s my setup. Added blower for better airflow, two layers of kapton tape on heat block to reduce heat loss when the blower comes on. Hopefully E3D will have their socks for the volcano available when I am ready to buy. Heat block is oriented in front of the Z sensor to clear in the back when Y is homed and allow more room for a fan air guide.
