I need a high precision scanner for small items. Anyone have any experience with the Atlas 3D? The results they display at the bottom of the page are beautiful. Any other recommendations are appreciated.

I have some basic experience with Sense or Fuel3D and it was anything but precise. The difference between cheaper (table or hand) scanners and pro solutions is too big. As the price is quite steep, maybe 3D scanning as a service is a good start. (I know, nothing is so satisfuing like to scan it on own table…
)
I used a Fuel3D and the results were disappointing. I’ve heard the most recent Sense scanner isn’t too bad (I think it’s version 3) but only turntable scanners get you high precision at a cheaper cost. I used a 3D Systems Capture with a turntable and the quality was really nice.
OK, it’s a matter of needs and expectations. And there are scanners capable to scan fingerprints on the part surface too…
We will be glad if you post your experience with Atlas (if you will choose it).
Fixed laser scanners, even with the part on a turntable, will not be able to scan into concave surfaces well or gaps between vertical objects. Atlas, Matter and Form, BQ Ciclop and Makerbot’s scanner are all of this type and the topology really limits its usefulness to convex surfaces.
I used the bq ciclop a while ago, but it was too much of a hassle post processing the scan. Maybe I should give it another try?
Try Piclop. Ciclop is not actively developed anymore.
