I newbie here. I am trying to make a object to print. It is pretty small and simple to use for casting pen blanks. I am using 3dsmax to create my object. When I import to print and check my layers to see how it is going to print there seems to be there. Is there a tutorial out there to help. I can see the object in the printer program.
Hi, Richard. What did you expect to happen that didn’t?
@Robert_Rapplean Agreed. Also it might help if you let us know what printer and slicer you’re using.
Maybe a few pictures would help us figure out what’s going on?
Slic3r has a tab that shows how the layers will be drawn if that’s what you’re looking for?
No i guess what I am trying to get at when I make a object in 3dsmax does it have to be a solid object?
This what I got when importing model from 3dsmax. It seems to only have 6 layers looks like I am missing something.

Looks like your model is very small, like 1x1x1mm. Probably exporting problem metric/imperial would be my best guess.
I have just been playing about with scale when exporting from Blender and found if I use mm as the world unit and then exported with a scale of 10 it was opening in slic3r at correct size. The size of your bed in your slicing app should make it obvious when your scale is messed up.
You may also want to download the newest version of Cura from Ultimaker’s website
@Denford_Berriman I find it easiest to ignore changing the units in Blender. 1 (default) Blender unit will = 1 mm in slicers. (not to hijack the thread).
@kongorilla Oh ok I’m still getting to grips with it, I might be remembering it incorrectly but for a while I was having to scale things to 1000%, once they started coming in a 100% scale my prints were coming out better.
@Richard_Gallatin if your model is really small, make sure you have it in millimeters, not inches. When I first started (I use cura), all my parts came in tiny. Once I realized why I either make it in mm or scale it by 2540%. This fixed my issue.
Thank You for the help. I scaled my model up in 3dsmax about 20 times bigger then exported. When I opened it in Cura it all looked good. I scaled back down and it worked.
@kongorilla I’m still not get a 1:1unit thing between blender and slic3r. How do you set that up?
@Denford_Berriman It’s absolute defaults. I suspect you’ve changed something away from the defaults. In the scene properties, under ‘Units’, delete any presets you may have applied. The parameters should read ‘Presets’ (rather than a specific unit of measurement), ‘Length’ should be ‘None’. When you export your STL, the exporter should have ‘Scale’ set to ‘1’.
@kongorilla ah ok. I have units set to metric and use mm measurements
