I took a pile of photos of one of my homemade Japanese lanterns with my new Nikon D3300. Need to work on that some more in my ‘spare’ time.
I have to say that I really like the idea of the active, colored Chinese lanterns. Are they purchased or are they DIY?

Huh that’s funny - I just independently did this as well. I used a different shade (they are surprisingly hard to find I thought). What board and strips are you using? I’m using a Photon and 60 LED/m Apa102s. I’m still working on my animations.
That would be about 20 APA102’s on a 30LED/m strip with a Nano, powered by a USB power bank. The lantern is homemade using bamboo strips and white tissue paper. I believe the sequence was aalight, which is on my github account. Sample construction photos (but not instructable) are at:
Homemade lantern shade - you really meant it when you said everything was DIY! I used the shade from this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80213597/ . I’m using 300 LEDS. I should look into some sequences that have already been coded. I tried the Fire2012, but didn’t like it terribly much. Right now I am coding my own. Going to hook it up to a smart hub eventually so I can choose different colors/animations.
Yep. I’d originally been using an Ikea Holmo lamp which I really liked. I wanted to have several lamps with a ‘natural’ look to them and now have 9 completed ones of different shapes and sizes as well as 3 under construction. Will be taking them to a couple of local lantern festivals. Here’s the Holmo from last summer:
Very nice! Is that central amorphous one an led strip partially covered with polyester pillow stuffing? Whatever it is … I like the lightning/neuron effect. I will share some photos when I get the chance to take some of mine in action. Want the animations a bit more polished though…
That’s polyester fibre fill from Walmart. Cheap. The neuron effect is in my github account and is called ripple.
