I want a broken Makerbot Smart Extruder - if anyone has one let me know. Will pay or swap it for equivalent value E3D stuff.

It would be fun to release an open source, improved, smart extruder retrofit.

I think you’re going to have a hard time with that…I’m pretty sure you have to turn the old one in to exchange for a new one. There are some disassembly videos out there. Of note, the original filament path was set in stone…then they determined it wouldn’t work. So the extruder has an appendix, if you will.

Holy crap, talk about a poor design! How do you build in ALL these good ideas (opto-wheel, magnetic clasps, quick disconnect, the funky insta-retract nozzle), then not make the extruder easy to unclog??

The effective hobbed diameter appears to be roughly the same as an MK7 hobbed pulley. I’d be much more concerned about all the thin plastic holding it all together.

I know of someone locally with a Replicator 2 that doesn’t work…

Looking at what it actually is, I guess you’re thinking of the metal end, so the printer is no use.

The Smart Extruder is not found on a Replicator 2.
