i was getting intermittent issues, and finally pin pointed it to not 1 but 2 bad USB micro cables…wow. bad cables. blah

Yep. Have had bad or marginal cables myself. Have long since added that to my troubleshooting steps. Interestingly, I have some micro USB cables that ONLY have 2 wires. 5V and Gnd. No data.
