If printing with clear ABS,

If printing with clear ABS, should the print come out clear or sort of clears/white. Repetier slic3r. 220, solidoodle

It comes out more of a cloudy-white, in part due to tiny air pockets caught in the plastic. Acetone smoothing makes it more clear, but it will never be as clear as the original filament.

Thanks for the info, i am trying some acetone now.

Some people have also reported for example, with T-Glase filament, that hot ends with PTFE liners cause the filament to be cloudy whereas all-metal hot ends tend to be clearer? I don’t think the PTFE would be off-gassing at those temps, but it’s been claimed.

@ThantiK That could also just be related to the different melting characteristics of the two styles of hot ends (hot zone length, abrupt vs. more gradual thermal transition, etc.) In my experience, all-metal hot ends tend to need slightly higher temperatures for the same material too.

Yeah, I’m not claiming to know exactly why this is claimed; no time to test it. But that’s was I was told by taulman. As far as his 645, he said the cloudiness was caused by recombination with the atmosphere while at Tg. I’m wondering if some sort of gas-shielding or similar could allow the print to retain its clarity. Obviously moisture, etc are factors as well.

This a brand new roll and has descant sealed in the bag. Glass shielding?

Nope, exactly how I typed it. Gas shielding. Like argon used in welding to keep oxidants from forming on the surface of metal. Don’t worry about it, it’s something extremely esoteric.

It would help if i read it better. I use 90/10 for my wire welder, so i understand that.

I use clear PLA, and if I heat too high or don’t allow small layer to cool enough, the past is crystal clear, abeit droopy. I believe it’s what @Whosa_whatsis said, when extruded at lower temps, there’s air pockets between the layers, not necessarily due to bad filament, but because you’re laying down elliptical beads. When I overheat the filament, it literally oozes all over and I’m literally stirring a hot PLA batter. In thinking the ABS may be similar as on small layers that I’ve printed in non clear abs, I’ve gotten that goopy batter stirred look as well
