I’m about to order some stepper motors are these suitable for a build like Prusa i3 or Smartcore?

Thanks.

Looks good to me. The holding torque for the Prusa is 40Ncm, so you have a little bit of a buffer which can only be of benefit. You may have to add some shims to the motors should the shafts be too long!

@Mark_Fletcher
Thanks for the reply

Looks good, they are > 40Ncm as @Mark_Fletcher points out, Bipolar with a 1.8 step angle.

Look great!! You might have just found me a new stepper source hahah. Thanks for the post!!

@The_Hozza we are trying to source a good quality, UK based, stepper motor source ourselves currently. If you find one we would be interested to here. Likewise If we find one we will let you know.

@iDig_3D_printing That would be awesome. A UK supplier that doesn’t add an extra £10 to every stepper motor they sell! I hate ordering from China due to the time it takes to arrive, but what choice have we got when the motors they sell are the exact same motors, but at a fraction of the price. Rip off Britain… lol

@iDig_3D_printing
Well I’m getting them from here, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5PCS-45Ncm-Nema-17-Stepper-Motor-2A-4-wire-1m-Cable-for-DIY-3D-Printer-CNC-Robot-/121693581325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c5580b00d

@The_Hozza Thats not too bad actually :smiley:

@Mark_Fletcher
Well this is something we are trying to determine, are all stepper motors made the same? One assumes not.

We have currently embarked on a project to build a Prusa i3, the idea being to try and source all the parts individually with a view to avoiding poor quality.

Hence we are currently looking for a Stepper motor supplier.

@The_Hozza
That looks like a good find.

With a 2A draw would you not need to use the bigger drv8825 drivers?

@Michael_Scholtz
the A4988 can also cope with a 2A draw.

If you’re using a RAMPs board, don’t they have a max of 2A per channel? At first glance, these look like they might fit the bill better. http://www.omc-stepperonline.com/3d-printer-motor-nema-17-168a-45ncm64ozin-17hs191684s-p-17.html

@Tom_Reagh
Ramps can power 2A motors, the whole point of the Stepper Drivers/controller is to manage the power output of the board, which is only 5A. After all Ramps has an output of 5A total for this circuit, if you have 5 stepper drives that would be 10A it would not be possible.

However, achieving more with less is always better.

Well I hope they’re OK as they’re on their way lol

@The_Hozza
Please tell us how you get on with them. Are you building a Prusa i3?

They’re good steppers, I don’t trust the A4988 to 2A though. You won’t need the full 2A anyways. DRV8825 all the way if you experience overheating on your drivers.

@ThantiK is right. If you are running one of these at 2A on a printer something isn’t right. Even on the extruder. I can run my whole printer on a 6A power supply at 12v (no heated bed).

@iDig_3D_printing I currently have one i3 running, so I’m going to try a Smartcore, as my goal is to build a printer with an E3D-V6 near to £150 as possible.
