I'm currently in the planning stages of custom building a Kossel,

I’m currently in the planning stages of custom building a Kossel, considering using a Duet 0.6 or 0.8.5 mainboard, what other recommendations are there and why?

Duet 0.8.5 and Azteeg x5 v2 are both good options. The Duet 0.6 (and original Smoothieboard for that matter) has really noisy ADC circuit design. Due+RADDS is another good option. That will run Repetier, Marlin, and RRF so you’re not tied down to one firmware.

Agreed Azteeg x5 v2, just ordered from ultibots and looking forward to compare to my Kossel running the v1

I just became a US distributor for the Duet and PanelDue if that helps:

@Tim_Elmore
It would apart from I’m in the UK.

So basically it’s just a matter of your preference?

Based on using multiple different boards on my Kossel I found the Azteeg to be the best for my taste. Was able to get it installed and setup with FSR quickly and printing has been a breeze with Smoothie. Again all comes down to preference as I run Marlin on a few other printers and it as well has been great.

Also V2 of the Azteeg has been greatly improved so I think it’s going to do well for many Kossel owners. Multiple fans pins and easier lcd and from what I read their is even Ethernet pin outs which could make it a great wireless printer.

The biggest improvement in the Azteeg x5 v2 is replacing the 8825s with THB6128s. A lot of people have issues with nasty print ripples or hissing noises with 8825s, particularly in 24v systems. Whereas 6128s have really great current control algorithms.

RADDS also typically uses THB6128s in swappable form (RAPS128 driver’s). The Duet and original Smoothieboard use onboard 4982s, which are good performers, but not quite as good as 6128s.

@Alex_Skoruppa I haven’t tried that yet, but I’m guessing it’s the set of pins right above the reset button that say TX0, RX0, etc.

Well I’ve decided to go with the Duet 0.8.5 from https://www.think3dprint3d.com/Duet

May also get of of these too https://www.think3dprint3d.com/PanelDue

But thanks for all the comments it’s very much appreciated.
