I'm looking for low cost printers.

I’m looking for low cost printers. They must:

  • meet my price range: $150 - 400 and
  • already in production (no Kickstarter-Dreams)

Are there others like the ones below?

QU-BD | One Up - $199.00
http://store.quintessentialuniversalbuildingdevice.com/product.php?id_product=144

MakiBox | A6 LT - $199.00
https://store.makibox.com/#/product-detail?type=1&&option=31

Printrbot Simple KIT - $349.00
http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-simple/

As far as I know the @Printrbot Simple is the only one you can get delivered today in the above list

Makibox is a 6-10 week lead from now, plus shipping time. They are starting to ‘ramp up’ production now so they should see the timeline improve. I’m still waiting on mine, but I’m an exception. I was one of the first backers, and had my order shipped by slow boat by accident. Makibox has been one long, very frustrating journey, and I still don’t know how well it will work.

Printerbot, and expect to spend %80 of your time calibrating/upgrading/tinkering and %20 actually printing things.

oneup and twoup are shipping i have one of each assembled in my office at work.

@Shachar_Weis yes it takes a bit of calibration (like any printer) but your 80/20 is well exaggerated. Had my @Printrbot Simple since December and I would say it’s pretty much the reverse ratio.

@Custom_Creations To make it clear: There is nothing against Kickstarter! My questions points towards printers, that are already in production.

And many kickstarter dreams failed. Most, even.

@Jim_Squirrel I believe (double checks site, yup) the oneup & twoup are taking pre-orders. Shipping won’t start until April (at the earliest). But I am keenly interested in reviews of them - I see you have experience with a few of them. How are they?

I’m thinking of getting a cheap printer and after initial build, test and deploy - cannibalizing it to build a bigger / better machine. Is the OneUp a good candidate for this kind of boot strap?

@Cassidy_S Makibox have seemingly been ramping up production for the last two years and are just now wrapping up the kickstarter orders.
@enhydra Keep in mind that cheap printers always means compromising on quality, which in turn means spending more time on dealing with potential problems.

@Custom_Creations , as an Eventorbot backer, and a lucky one that actually took delivery of one, I can tell you, Kickstarter is very risky, an after “investing/gambling” a couple grand over the last few years on Kickstarter and indie go go, I’ve cut myself off. Out is beyond early adoption, it is preordering prototypes, many times in the alpha stages. So now I always advise, make sure they’ve already built alpha and beta prototypes and are ready for true production, otherwise, your gonna have a bad time

@enhydra , despite the larger price, I’d also suggest the printrbot simple. Since you’re pretty active in the forums, you’ve read your fair share of success from that printer and also know that @Brook_Drumm is very active in the community as well. The design is far more mature, and there’s much more documented bills and hacks on the web

@Eric_Moy Indeed, I recognised how well documented the @Printrbot simple is and I read about its potential. But perhaps there are printers in the same price range.

Best of luck- whatever you choose!
Brook

There’s a new low-end RepRap being developped right now, the +Smartrap (link won’t work!). It’s passed below the radar until now because the author is French and mostly communicates in the French RepRap sub-forum. The website http://www.smartfriendz.com is not loading right now so I cannot tell if it’s in the price range you require. He is just starting shipping the first kits so this is very new, for a proven design the Printrbot Simple seems like the logical choice.

OK the site finally loaded, the Smartrap is €450 fully assembled. The kit is between €215-€350 depending on options. It’s a cool project for a second printer though. The vitamin count is low, many parts are printed.

Thanks you guys for all your replies. It will help us to decide, which low cost printer we are going to choose.
Our plan is to have an alternative to the Ultimaker, so we can plan workshops and guided buildups (for Maker with a tiny budget).

The new metal construction Simple is worth considering at $599 but won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
