I'm thinking about getting the $300 makibot.

I’m thinking about getting the $300 makibot. I’m sure there is going to be a good bit of a wait for them though.

Is there a more diy solution that would be better for about the same price? I have access to some one who has a replicator 2 so I can get some parts printed.

You might want to take a look at the reprappro Huxley - http://reprap.org/wiki/RepRapPro_Huxley

Very interesting I wonder what the total cost is less the printed parts. Even if its more than $300 thats ok as with this method I can spread out the spending.

http://reprappro.com/Huxley - depends on where you live ;-). But they offer kits with and without the printed parts. I have built the predecessor of this machine, the eMAKER Huxley and I love it

Good to hear. I’m over the pond (usa) from the reprappro people. I will have to find a parts list and see what I can source local.

I’m currently building one with a friend, it’s costing him roughly $400 (probably less) to build one, it can probably be brought down if you can source the parts cheaper.
A Wallace would probably be easier and cheaper, the wiki estimates it’s cost at $250, and it’s really simple to put together.

The only problem I’ve had building the Huxley has been sourcing the M6 smooth rods for a decent price.

Humm I will check out the Wallace as well. Is there much difference between the two print quality wise?

Makibox - not Makibot  If you want to build a
3d Printer yourself, why not go with a Morgan?

I wouldn’t necessarily go with Morgan for a first RepRap. It’s still pretty new, and you’d probably want to cut your 3D printer troubleshooting teeth on a machine the community knows well already.

There was a guy in the US trying to work up a lowest cost BOM for a Prusa i3, and was working with people in IRC to get there. Here is the fruit of that labor.

He appears to be editing it as I type!

Wonder if he is active on this group or not.

I recently got a printrbot Simple (Beta). The non-beta is $299 and seems to have a larger build volume.

I like my printrbot. I have a kickstarter edition and just got the simple. Simple and you can move the parts to a bigger bot if you want to down the road

This is awesome info. I’m new to the group and thinking about building one in the near future.
