Is it just me or does ABS emit more than twice the amount of fumes past a certain temperature (which varies by spool of filament)?
I am thinking that you need to keep the filament under that temperature if you want to keep your health and the print would be soggy beyond that temperature too.
How hot are you printing? Most of the abs I run I can go up to 245-250 and not notice fumes of any sort.
I’ve definitely noticed that the odor from different suppliers’ ABS varies quite a bit, and it does seem to be a bit temperature-dependent. It may not be the ABS itself that you’re smelling, however. It may also be the dyes.
238C was too low, due to temperature swing. It tends to swing a few C for me. Maybe I need to recalibrate PID settings.
240C tends to keep it up above 238C which is what I really need.
245C had the ABS smell alot worse than usual.
I might try 242C or 243C and see if things behave better.
With your properly tuned in printer extruding into mid air, is the filament still strong or will it break up when you handle it? 245C causes it to break up.
I may need to recalibrate my towers AGAIN (calibrated them about 5 times since August) since the thing seems too close to the heated bed. For the moment, I have a Z offset via G10. With it recalibrated or offset well enough, I might be able to lower the temperature some more. I am having trouble with my first layers not coming out and have had trouble with the filament not extruding mid print before.
my abs tends to still be strong and springy after extruded. Sounds like you have some bad filament.

@Joe_Spanier Care to take the ABS over temp and see if it becomes weak then?
Ive gone to 260 without issue with it.
It might be the monoprice black filament then.
Oh yea thats it. There are little regulations on what is called “ABS” as long as the components that make it up are there thats all that matters. More things can be added and black is notorious to be a “dirty” color. People have found metal chunks, recieved other types of plastics etc. Monoprice has been a big offender of those.
