Is the first thing that people print from their first (diy) printer something to make the printer better?

Two endstop holders, a fan shroud and a ramps case are my first things I need. Printing stuff to make printing stuff better.

Yes. Printrbot has you print a fan shroud for the simple metal when you build it (well had anyway)

Yep, true. My wife asked when I got it running what was I going to print, told her parts for the printer, lol!

Sort of. The official order of prints is:

  1. Calibration
1a) One or two (max) parts to improve calibration of prints
  2. Something useful to appease the S.O. that the printer is not just a toy
  3. More improvements.
  4. Either D&D figurines and/or
  5. Household improvements (switch guards, covers, etc)
  6. Finally you start printing for others (ie: 3DHubs)

Up to 4 you were close to the typical uses.

Number 6 is of course code for sex toys.

First thing I print is calibration stick to check delta arm length.

But yes after fully calibrated I start printing some new part for my printer

Yeah totally, they are still calibration parts. Print tugboat, print printer part, reprint tugboat to assess quality change, repeat

Back in the day the first print was a shot glass. If you were lucky and calibrated correctly then you could celebrate.

First thing was a benchy. Then I noticed the Teflon tube didn’t move freely, so I printed a guiding piece. Then feet because electronics and steppers got too hot, then different spool holders, then different feet that allowed mounting a fan, then a fan holder for the bed,…

Now I wonder if I ever printed something not for the printer?

Print somthing that is Wife 1.0 compatible… That is the key to futher 3D printing success

@Stephanie_A is there really a “back in the day” already?
