Is there a website calculator or something similar where you can select your threaded rod size (ACME) and other pertinent information and get a chart of the best layer heights to use? I know there’s a relatively simple formula for figuring it out, but it’d be a great resource to get a complete list.
Are you thinking of the “Optimal layer height for your Z axis” section of the Prusa Calc - http://calculator.josefprusa.cz/ ?
Yes, yes I am. Thank you Stephen! (And Josef Prusa!)
Unfortunately, the conversion from an imperial pitch to steps/mm will always result in a non-terminating decimal, so you’re still going to have rounding errors in your layer height with any imperial (and even some metric!) pitches.
Always seems to be some interference with getting it just right! It’d be nice to have screw mapping in 3D printing software.
My prints come out pretty good generally and the dimensions are never off enough to ‘break’ a project, but I just figured I would try to get this thing in line as much as possible before I switch to the Bowden extruder.
The error introduced by the non-terminating decimal @Whosa_whatsis is talking about isn’t (usually) enough to break a print, but it introduces errors that you’ll see. Or, to describe it as I saw it, introduces errors that you’ll see when you finally get rid of (or even just minimize) them.
