Is there any way to add a bitmap image on to a surface to be 3D printed such that all the black areas of the picture are sunk in and all the white areas of the picture are level with the surface? The image is just black and white. Its a logo.
You can use blender to do that, it’s called a bump map. There are many tutorials illustrating how to do it.
Blender? Is that a CAD program?
Blender is a 3d modeling program. It can read and manipulate many CAD program file formats, quite possibly the one you are using.
im using 123D design since Fusion 360 is too much for my suckish laptop to handle. It takes like half an hour just open the program then another half hour before i can actually do anything. Its annoying lol
A slight correction to what has been written above – Yes, you can do this in Blender, but you’d do it with a displacement map (not a bump map, which is merely a rendering trick that makes it appear as if some areas are raised or lowered).
Ahhhh. Well blender makes my crappy laptop crash. And i tried importing the files to 123D design as an SVG file and it looks like crap. I need some help with this lol
you can with openscad AFAIK
actually I think is a very fun project to learn, I can help if you want
Openscad? Ok ill look into it
@Cristian_Martinez maybe you will need to vectorize the image, since it will be black and white, it will be easy to vectorize

@Joe_Cabezas man you just dont know how helpful youre being right now. Thanx!
cool!, show us your results!
I most certainly will! Quick question do you happen to know how i can keep someone from stealing my logo?
@kongorilla Yup, my bad, bump map is just a visual and doesnt modify the mesh. Sorry about that…
Try @Mark_Wheadon ’s velocity painting @ http://velocitypainting.xyz
A this could be used to add any image?
@Cristian_Martinez stealing your logo?, what do you mean?, from the 3d file?, well, what stop other to use actual brands logos on their products?, the best way is a patent AFAIK
Yeah i made a logo i wanna use when i get a little side business started
