It looks like I will be getting my @igus_Inc filament sample soon. As I don’t have a 1.75mm hot end yet has anyone tried putting 1.75 mm filament through a direct 3mm E3D v5 ? Aside from the obvious extruder step settings, is there any other consideration or reason it wouldn’t work ?
tl;dr: Bad idea, don’t try it.
I am not an expert, but I think the unmelted filament is sort of a ‘plunger’ to push the plastic out.
Using 1.75mm in a 3mm hot end, the melted plastic would not be under pressure, and would just flow back up to fill the 3mm diameter. If it cooled enough, you might eventually end up with a 3mm plug, but the thinner filament above it would buckle in the larger shaft. Might not cause harm to your hot end, but why risk it?
Yup - wont work but will cause extra work cleaning up the mess
@Carlton_Dodd Now that I think about it you are absolutely right ! Obviously I wasn’t thinking before !
@William_Frick “New Stuff!” was clouding your mind. I’ve been there SO many times!
It’ll buckle, especially on fast extrusion. I use 1.75 nylon to clear 3mm nozzles sometimes as the thinner diameter can get through some nasty clogs. I have to do it slower than usually as the filament starts to bend between the idler and barrel then it buckles.
@Ashley_Webster As I later came to understand it is only 1.75mm … what the heck I needed an excuse to buy a V6 !
