Reliable unattended printing, and Repeatability.
These are a couple of ghosts I printed for Halloween. All I have is black PLA. I’m going to have to get some “natural” PLA so I can put LEDs inside.

How do i get started in 3d printing.

@Roger_Tyson Cheapest way I found was the PrintrBot Simple at $300. Of course you’ll also need some more filament, and maybe some other parts/accessories.

@Mic_Possert I considered the Solidoodle, but couldn’t justify the extra $200 when I have ~$900 invested in a RigidBot that I’m waiting for. If it’s going to be @Roger_Tyson 's only printer, I probably wouldn’t recommend the PrintrBot line. Solidoodle and Ultimaker both come to mind as good options.

@Mic_Possert Which part of solidoodle is quasi open source?

@Mic_Possert No problem i should have said i have one before. Saved you some typing. The STL’s i think aren’t actually solidooldle but from somebody that has remade them or use Lawsy’s upgrade. Please correct me if i am wrong. So far i have not seen specs on the frame and Z lift plate. Most everything else has documentation.

@Mic_Possert No problem with hijacking. The discussion is interesting, and I’m guilty of hijacking a thread myself now and then.

@Carlton_Dodd @Mic_Possert Alright i will continue then, thanks.

Took a long time to get it and before i received it i thought i was going to have to fix the Z right away. I even bought the parts, but after using it and it printed great i have yet to replace the Z.
I think the frame is well engineered, that is one reason i chose it as opposed to a Prusa style.

I didn’t get the factory heat bed as again i had read in the forums about an issue there, slow heating and not reaching temp. I bought a silicone heat bed from China. Same company that supplies QD-BD and printed out Lawys heat bed system. Have not tried it, still waiting for delivery.

Seems people cut down the brass bushings. I have used them in the past and they are quite good. The ones in the rear for the Y are rated at 16,000 RPM’s.

I am surprised really how well it prints with the carriage able to slop around like it does, almost 2MM it looks like. If i was building one i would be skiddish about putting it out that way but again it seems not to be that much of an issue for the prints. Altho i do not see why not.

I would have preferred different electronics that have replaceable drivers, but this one is working well. The first thing i did was print a dual 40MM fan cover so i can minimize any heating issues that may arise.

All in all i am pleased with this and would recommend it for purchasing if someone asked.

Next time i will build one.
