I’ve been meaning to get this working ever since I saw that FastLED supported SmartMatrix… Basically it’s a modified AllPixel firmware (which uses FastLED of course) that strips out the LED strip chipsets and just replaces it with the SmartMatrix class. BiblioPixel can then be configured as you would with basically any other 32x32 matrix display 
Next I think I need to get the FastLED noise functions working in BiblioPixel somehow (I love the SmartMatrix demo that ships with FastLED). Can’t decide if I want to just port to python or finally learn how to make C extensions
