I’ve been testing out the Bendlay filament I bought earlier in the week to see if I can make a coffee cup I can actually drink out of.

First test, apart from the obvious stacking issue, looked promising so I’m giving it another go today.

Still not sure if I’d actually drink out of it yet but was fun to test.

So the 2nd test print was promising, though I think I need to run it through vapour bath to smooth it off so that it keeps the coffee stains at bay.

Still not quite sure if I’m actually going to drink out of it though.

Would be cool to hear from others doing similar tests.

Are you sure the filament you’re using is food safe? PLA is fine, but the ridged nature of 3D prints means you’ll never get it clean.

@Michael_Vaughan that’s what it says on the tin :slight_smile:

From my tests so far coffee does stain the print so my next set of test will be to see if I can stop that from happening.

Here’s the specs: http://www.formfutura.com/3mm-bendlay.html

That is awesome!

Very cool, then.

I’d be more concerned about what the printer itself adds to the filament (in terms of debris, etc.). That said, I’ve drank from dirtier cups and survived :wink:

@Jason_Gullickson yeah, that’s very true. The latest print actually has some debris from left over ABS filament.

I’d probably suggest having a separate extruder for doing these types of prints.

It may be labeled as food safe, but I would be skeptical. I doubt that is something that is being audited to ensure compliance. The print is cool though.

@Steve_Kenney I’m a bit skeptical too I’d be more comfortable with cold foods being put in it but microwaving and pouring hot drinks into prints are probably not covered.

Is fun to play around with though :slight_smile:

You have to be aware, unless yiou have a stainless steel hot end, it may be leaving trace elements in the plastic, too.

@Michael_Vaughan that’s a good point :slight_smile:
