I’ve been trying out the new teensy 3.1 and associated audio shield from PJRC.com and they’re awesome! This is the shield doing 128 band fft and reading an SD card and some other maths and it’s still hitting about 70-80FPS. Documentation is still sparse but they’re still being written and the basics were easy to get going.
This is using the line input, mic i’m still working on as it’s a lot quieter and noisier, a lot of that probably due to the cheap tiny mic i am using. This setup is now partially installed for a customer, hopefully their joiner will finish up soon so I can complete wiring and take some better videos! final controller will have mic/line, DMX or computer control options, all these parts done and partially tested but not yet integrated together.

Wow! Looks just great, both build and software.

How big across would you say that circular part is?

haha! the build is non existent here - it’s just thrown on the floor. the circular thing is a cheese box that i use to keep off-spool light segments in for a bit of protection, it’s just over 12". Total pixels 309 which is as you can see not a problem for the speed, voltage drop for even that few was a nightmare to deal with though. It’s all now inside the frame for a DJ booth in a local club where i will hopefully be able to finish it and video it soon!

Ah! Cheese box. Excellent choice.

Can’t wait to see it more structurally installed, too, I guess!

The audio reactivity looks good.

Looks awesome!

where is this 128 band fft shield?! custom perhaps??

It’s available from http://pjrc.com - look for audio shield in the shop, made by the same guy who makes the teensys .
