Just build my first 3D printer.

Just build my first 3D printer. Seems working fine, but I noticed some spaces between layers. Is this normal? If not, how this can be fixed? I’m using PLA, speed is 100mm, temperature is 220C. Leveled heat-bed with paper sheet.

Looks like under extrusion, have you checked the calibration of your E step?

Hmm, no. I will check it, thanks.

make sure your filament is set to the right diameter.

Also, 100mm/s seems a bit fast for a first print. Try starting at 50 and go from there when everything seems fine

Is it an i3?

@The_Hozza yes.

I printed anover cube with low speed (35mm), and it looks much better.

Also I tryed to calibrate extruder, using straw and marker, and found instead 100 mm extruder takes only 90mm of plastic. But EEPROM menu of Repetier Host is inactive, so I can’t change this settings. I wonder, why it is so?

Congrats!!! :slight_smile:

First of all 100mm a second isn’t good for starting out. I still print at around 30 sometimes if I’m willing to wait. That’s where you should start. Your hotend might not be able to keep up with the speed so your extrusion rate might be too low. I would stop down your speed first and then see what happens.

@Vladimir_rvo_va_r in your configuration.h file is a setting: (i think it’s called) eeprom set: 0 or 1 or 2. You can find it as well in the configuration tool from repetier. Should be at least 1, depends if you want to overwrite or keep eeprom settings.

I see. I heard maximum speed of such printer is 150mm, so I thought 100 is not so much.
Here I printed some cubes with different settings, left to right:
layer=0.3, speed=100
layer=0.3, speed=35
layer=0.2, speed=100
layer=0.2, speed=60
layer=0.2, speed=90
layer=0.2, speed=45

Seems like lowering layer to 0.2 eliminated problem with gaps between layers, but on higher speed there is geometric distortions.
Also all this cubes have some distortion near base (heat-bed too hot?) and in all cubes on of the corners is distorted (I guess it is place there hotend pauses for a fraction of second after filling one layer). Any advises welcomed! =)

What size nozzle are you using?

I think, Your extruder have not enough speed and acceleration values. Check it. My extruder (bowden type) works well with max speed 100mm/s and accel. 10000 mm/s^2. Resolution is important, it should be over 170 steps per mm

Nozzel is 0.4

If you can slow your first few layers speed to make sure it has good adhesion, that’s what I do. But I don’t use a heated bed. Normally for me the base later speed is to fast and doesn’t adhere so while the top layers are cooling they shrink and cause the warping. Or your fan isn’t on. I just always have to remember that cooling causes shrinking and therefore good adhesion prevents severe warping.

The bed temp for PLA, for me anyway, starts at 60C for the first layer then drops to 50C. This should eliminate the spreading at the base. You also may want to try adjusting your nozzle temp, 220C is on the high side for PLA. I usually print at 195C, but then again not at 100mm/sec.
