Just courious, are there yet any non-toxic/ safe to handle/ safe to dispose UV resins that can be used in DLP 3D printers?

I’ve just watched this kickstarter video for a sub $1000 such printer and it ignited again some interest but won’t do anything about it unless safe resins are developed… safe for home use that is, wheere we don’t have training, special equipment, safe disposal aggreements,etc.

Uncured resin is basically light-sensitive superglue. It’s going to be unpleasant because it has to be highly chemically reactive in order to do what it does. You can’t get away from that.

With that said, ESUN claims to have a PLA-based resin that is non-toxic and biodegradable, but I am pretty skeptical until I see toxicology test data. I suspect it’s only non-toxic in the fully cured state. https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/esun-release-bio-based-sla-resin-eresin-pla-95317/

@Ryan_Carlyle
Aren’t all pretty benign in the fully cured stat? I believe that is just a marketing gimmick, greenwash as they say…

@Florian_Ford Studies show the prints leach raw uncured chemical. For example, if you put an SLA print in a fish tank, the fish will gradually die off. The final cured polymer is safe, but it’s impossible to get it to 100.0000% cure.

That’s quite sad.

And how many home owners of such printers will comply… how many businesses really comply…

Even worse, I a sales person of a major SLA manufacturer told me that the resins where safe to handle, even in a none-cured state.

Still have this in my email:
“There isn’t anything wrong with touching the resin and gloves are not technically required”

So that isn’t helping in the environmental and safety issue of SLA.

I would never handle the raw resin or prints in the “green” state (just of of the printer) without gloves… all SLA prints should be properly post-cured in a UV chamber before handling.
