just finished the second and third ISOLED… they look good together and If it weren’t for the 90 dollar material costs each I would make many more…

Looking great
Super cool Bert.
thnkz! took some time (2 years) but finally after a lot of iterations it’s now just print and snap together and I am very pleased with it myself, so thnkz FastLED users for the inspiration to get something up and running also!

Beautiful! You inspired me to start trying to build my own, smaller truncated & chamfered icosaLEDron: https://twitter.com/jasoncoon_/status/929163385232650245

Nice Jason!
and your name is more correct being it an truncated icosahedron, See you’re using the same printing method with an open top and seperate cover… you glue them on? How long is your print time? I’m at 36 hours in total on my zortrax m200
Thanks @Bert_Simons ! Yeah, I had already been experimenting with different 3D printed LED polyhedra (like my rhombic triacontahedron) when I saw your ISOLED. Your approach seemed much better and easier than mine.
After a lot of failed experiments, I think I’ve finally found the correct tolerance and thickness to make the tops snap in tightly without using glue.
Each face took about an hour to print, plus the tops and clips, I’m well over 40 hours on my Monoprice Maker Ultimate (rebranded Wanhao Duplicator 6). Here’s a timelapse of two faces printing: https://twitter.com/jasoncoon_/status/928825152082759680
ah you went through the same hardships
took me also ages before I got a snug fit, stiil snapping in place but without any lightleaks. Initially I was at 1,5 hour each face, since the zortrax always prints a raft, but after ‘‘hacking’’ it’s propriety zcode I managed to use raftless cura sliced gcode and brought eacht face down to 30/35 minutes while still having a good quality using HIPS and a closed heated printchamber.
ow and going through your twitter feed…I saw thes blinkytiles isocahedrons…thats nice…should have bought one of these, could have had a social live instead of making my own
@Bert_Simons , have you thought about molding and casting the parts in larger volumes? I would gladly chip in and/or buy a set from you!
@Jason_Coon I did not start this with production in mind, just as a personal project and to get to know the limits of my 3d printer. But started giving it a thought after having finished the first completed one and the reactions I get on it .To produce it in larger volumes would take some time again redesigning it for injection molding and additional costs on molds etc. Think I would prefer to spent my time on a next new fun project and for now just make one per week on my printer
@Bert_Simons I own and run a print farm here in AZ which produces a product I developed. If you want to chat about larger scale printing just let me know. -Tom
