Sure you could - you just likely don’t spend 40 hours a week to dedicate to it.

I just saw that one too!! So much stuff is designed with solidworks it’s crazy. I have seen endless kick starters showing designs in solidworks
The problem for many of us is that there’s no sane licensing option for solidworks for individual hobbyists 
The student version is like $100, but yes, you’re right
I think solidworks will eventually have a cheaper/hobby version. I get it through my school so I haven’t paid but there are so many good free programs out there now that I think they will have some serious competition quite soon.
It is odd – solidworks is clearly the Photoshop of the 3D modelling world in that many people who produce great work use it, and I for one would probably have opted for it if I could (the learning curve is steep, so I’d rather start on something I’m likely to stick with for the foreseeable future), but solidworks just isn’t an option for a non-student who doesn’t have their workplace paying for it – their prices are plain daft for a non-professional. I’ve ended up paying for and learning rhinoceros 3D instead, as Solidworks doesn’t want my money, whereas McNeel is happy to take it.
