Last night I did a test to see how Smooth-On’s XTC-3D finishing resin works. I printed the fan shroud for my @Printrbot Simple Metal and applied the resin in a few minutes. After drying over night, I sanded then painted with black spray paint. I think it turned out pretty well!

Looks great!

WOW… :o

you should sand and paint the other one so that we can all see the difference. because I can sand ABS parts to a shine normally. so why use the XTC-3D at all?

How much strength does the resin adds to the part?

@Benjamin_Engel XTC-·3D also works with PLA, that’s more easy to print than ABS.

@Jean-Francois_Talbot I doubt it adds much strength, maybe a little. It really is just filling in the gaps between layers so there probably isn’t a ton of material left after sanding.

@Benjamin_Engel Sanding PLA is very time consuming. I don’t think I could get that finish in the time it took me to sand the resin. It really only took me 15 minutes to finish the part (aside from drying time for resin and paint).
