Limited cnc work experience, most of it on a 2d surface with minimal 3rd axis
I love wood , and was daydreaming (till I saw the prices people ask for) of being a complete set of tableware - 8 sets of a cup, a bowl, and a plate, all out of teak wood
Now I’m curious about making a cnc lathe and machining my own (assuming I could afford the wood in the first place)
Any suggestions on building a lathe to cnc with?
Also any suggestions on a cheaper wood that is compatible for fabricating dishes with (food safe as well as cosmetically appealing)?
I second a diy cnc wood lathe sounds very tempting if the build cost is affordable
No, please don’t look! Unless you intend to cut only foam!
But it is really possible to build a DiY lathe for wood. Even for aluminium if it is well dimensioned.
A mill with a fourth axis would do a good job for this application. The trouble of course is the CAM software.
Josh Rhodes, where can I get initial plans for such a mill, and do you know of any worthwhile Linux (most familiar with Debian, Ubuntu, and redhat, can software (I don’t mind paying for higher quality but most of the free stuff seems to solve most of my needs)
Also I’m daydreaming if using a cheap lathe that handles about 8 inch length and a roughly 6 inch swing. The one in particular I’m looking at is harbour freight and tools, needs a sturdy mounting to a stable level table and unless it’s in sale it’s about $550
Is that going to be sufficient , or do I really need to buy a heftier, more expensive unit?
Also an odd question, but am thinking of how to automate swapping cutting blades, as well as the rotational velocity
Another odd question as well, can some of the control signaling be done on dtmf or is their a better alternative?
