Looking for suggestions on how to capture a POV display on video.  I can't

Looking for suggestions on how to capture a POV display on video. I can’t wrap my head around that one. Somehow I think this is not possible … or you end up with chunks of the display on film. Correct?

It all depends on how much control you have over the camera.

Whether still or video, you will probably need a darkened environment, a small aperture and long/slow shutter. Also a good tripod and a remote start/stop/release for the camera so it all stays still.

On a stills camera, set the shutter to be around the duration of the POV display. On video, you will need to experiment. Focussing exactly on the POV could be difficult, hence using a small aperture to compensate.

I can do stills just fine. It’s capturing video that I’m trying to do. Focusing isn’t the problem here, that’s all preset. But it’s hard to capture based on the speed of the display, especially since in my case it’s being spun around. Fast spinning produces serious brightness stepping in camera. Slow spinning sort of works, but the patterns themselves are squished then … Argh. Maybe I’ll just stick to stills.

I know what you mean. The metering in the cam0era is affected by bright spots. Hence you must fix the shutter and aperture. Don’t let the camera use its metering. If you can’t set both of these to manual and fixed, you’ve had it I’m afraid.

When I said that it’s all preset, I meant, it’s all done manually. I set the camera up. My problem isn’t with that.

Just curious: what make/model camera, and lens are you using? Also, have you changed any settings from auto? I use my Sony NEX VG10 with the standard telephoto lens attached and the night setting (in a dark room) seems to work ok - but I am not moving the image around much.
