LPD1886 36-bit colour!!

I’ve just heard about 36-bit colour strips. Has anyone any experience with them? Are there any fast versions - I can only see ones with Data lines only. I think that’s my tree for 2015 sorted!

I’ve done a little bit of playing with the 1886 - but not a whole lot yet. Most of the manufacturers seem to most be doing 24bit color so far still.

Searching for “36 bit LPD1886” on ebay results in some 5m / 1m strips. They look a bit slow. But I hope the future holds fast ones - imagine the smooth fades possible.

All lpd1886 are 36 bit, you might get more results searching just for lpd1886 - also, you may get better pricing on aliexpress instead of eBay.

The data rate is the same 800kbps as ws2811s, however you are sending 50% more data per pixel. Where a single led would take 30us, it would now take 45us.

I used real 16 bit color strip in the past , lighthouse , absend stuff .
They are expensive and used in the professional market . With lighthouse we made a 20 mm pitch with my semi driver , who was n,t posible to drive from fast led . If you are interested I can send you information what we used for controll … One off my favourite work I made was the " led car for mini , Google miniartbeat …

Sounds interesting. Have you posted videos of those?

@kriegsman and i are already thinking about/planning for 16bit rgb support (which would easily support the lpd1886 as well) as well as RGBW support.

There images posten by the client …mini , BMW

I think 36 bit is 12 bit R, 12 bit g, 12 bit B - as opposed to 24 bit (8 bits per channel). 16 bit is a step backwards methinks?? (unless 48 bit!!) - I can’t find any 36bit on Aliexpress, but I’m sure it will happen soon. (though my searching skills are not great…)

No - when I say 16bit rgb I mean 16 bit for each of r,g, and b - 48bit all around.

Wow! (Daniel) - do you know of any such products available now? Any fast ones?
