Auto levelling is cool. The next step should be to get the firmware to tell you which corner you should adjust to get the bed level. Then take new measures, repeat until perfect.

Does the print end up vertical with a slanted base or perpendicular to the bed ?

So far as I can tell is that it should print perpendicular, just as if you have leveled the bed yourself.

@Nick_Adams So it has to adjust x,y, and z for the entire print. The typical bed wouldn’t have that an extreme ‘unlevelness’ except for a special case or extremely lazy tech. :slight_smile:

@William_Frick Yes I believe so.

But I think one of the added benefits that come with a system like this is they can possibly ship with a fixed print bed (read no spring adjustments) that is known to be true when assembled and then compensate for any slight future/shipping out of level situations programmatically. This gives them kind of and “Out of the box” beginner friendly system.

I am hypothesising here but I definitely see a lot of potential by getting this feature baked into the printrboard firmware.

Found this as well which outlines the feature and plans well: http://printrbot.com/2014/01/19/printrbot-demonstrates-auto-bed-leveling/

Yes, the whole point is to increase ease of use while lowering cost. Our new metal Simple will not need a manual bed leveling system, so no double layer print bed and no springs. Awesome!

Just a small FYI. For the UM2 I looked into this, however, for Ultimaker there where 2 problems with it. First, because your nozzle is going up and down during the print the edge of the nozzle will drag into the print, effecting quality. It’s only a tiny bit, but it shows on our prints.
Secondly, it generates a whole lot of extra noise due to the Z moving all the time. No idea how much of a problem that is for the Printrbot. But for the Ultimaker the Z is much more noisy then the X/Y.

Still awesome to see Bernards idea being used.

Metal Simple sounds nice @Brook_Drumm
