The K40 etches glass without any other steps involved. This was done for a friend who used it for a project for her friend.

You can also engrave the back side of a mirror then paint it. Then you get an image on the mirror and retain the smooth surface on the front of the mirror.

Below is a link to an item I made while playing with the process. I left the bird unpainted so the bird transmits light like frosted/etched glass.
