This time I tried using sandpaper before the acetone vapour treatment to reduce the layer visibility. Not totally successful; it could have stood a bit more sanding I reckon.

Have you tried playing around with the variable layer height in slic3r? I was looking through their FAQ this weekend, and it might be of some use to you.

@Brett_Giesler - no, I haven’t noticed that before. However, I do know that Simplify3D also offers the same feature and, after seeing this print, I did thought about trying this approach on the next one. This model was printed at 0.15 mm layer height but it would be really interesting to see the impact of dropping that to 0.10 mm at the start of the face, or about 1 cm from the top.

Make sure the layer height matches the z axis steps or you will not get even steps
