motors too hot

These are 5V, 7.2mH, .25A per phase actuators. I am running them through a V1.1 Smoothieboard. I have tried knocking down the current to keep them from going up in smoke but they heat up very quickly to the point that they smell and cant be touched at all. I am sure they are exceeding the 70°C max temperature.
The Smoothie does not seem to respond to the current settings using the axis_current settings or the M907 command. I have not set the digipot chip type as I dont know what it is and I cant seem to find it in the documentation or with a google search.
Thanks for any help.

Someone asks this question from time to time, the answer is : steppers are designed to get hot, temperatures above 100c are common and within specs. As long as your drivers don’t shut down automatically, everything is fine.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I already know that and expect the drives to get hot…just not this hot. I would like to know that I am setting the digipot settings correctly. Is there a test point on the board where I can look at the commanded values? Can you tell me what the correct digipot chip is for the V1.1 Smoothie? It seems to me that if I set current to zero, the motors should be at least be very weak. They are as peppy as ever…even under load! Thanks again.
