I’d like to take the custom settings in the generated config-override and merge them into the main config file so that I can delete the config-override file altogether. It’s confusing having the settings in 2 places and when you change a setting in the config file ‘nothing changes’. Somehow I’'m supposed to know what settings are overridden and then know how to change and re-save the overridden values as you’re not supposed to edit the file directly.
Sounds like I have to:
- Find the M command and syntax of the parameter that I want to change
- Execute the command
- Save with M500?
Rather than just typing in the setting in the config file with all the other settings in a human-readable form.
Alternately, could I just have settings that are automatically generated (usually auto calibration) there and not others? E.g. why would I want to override things like motor current and parameters that I’ve correctly set in the config file and don’t need to be overwritten?

Agreed, I was told I should move override settings into my config file, but with no guidance on what goes where
The override file has no comments or indication of where things should go, and I have found some things to have no corresponding setting, at least one that I can find easily.
I suppose I could spend a few weeks learning all of the M codes and G codes, and then move these settings over, but I needed to print something today.
or tomorrow
or this week.
So I still have an override file, and if you use Windows WordPad, it can be edited, as long as you just SAVE, and dont SAVE AS.
I feel that I am fairly good at setting up and configuring my smoothie board, but I dont think there is a good guide on how to move overrides into standard config file.
A lot of editing is going on in the Smoothie documentation, so maybe it is coming soon
M500 only exists because of Marlin and the like, I’d really love if it didn’t exist at all.
I recommend you save your config-override file, delete it from the SD card, never issue M500 ever again, and just configure your machine using the normal config file.
That’s what most users do, M500/config-override is useful mostly only if you are used to Marlin and such.
How do you save bed leveling data then? I took your advice and deleted my over-ride file. Now I have to use the M561 command and about 30 numbers. Not real easy.
What am I doing wrong.
How do they save leveling data?
Leveling data is saved in a separate file.
