My ABS smoother is finished… Giving it try now… Let see how it goes.
I used an air lock to avoid acetone vapor getting out of the jar.
The aquarium pump ensure air flow within the jar (otherwise bottom get smoother that top).
The funnel is used for adding acetone inside the jar.
Love it!
nice! but didn’t the rubber and plastic from the pump deteriorate?
@Ulrich_Baer the rubber isn’t sensitive to acetone. For the pump, I used a one way flow part (the thing with the red piece in it). It should be ok… I will see after some time I guess.
Is it heated?
@Benjamin_Santalucia This is a circular system or? The pumps intake is from the chamber. Both rubber and silicone (the red part) are affected by propanon (aceton) also the clear case … If the pump is only pumping outside air in the glas you will be safe.
@Ulrich_Baer yes the pump is only pumping outside air into the jar. The extra air will evacuate by the air lock.
@Jonathon_Thrumble No it is not. It use normal evaporation of acetone at room temperature. I did try with heated elements but it was not really safe. Acetone is flammable so I would rather not have it close to a flame. I also tried re-using a baby bottle heater but temperature was always too high.
I tried ultrasonic mist as well. But never managed to get acetone mist. I guess the frequency to use for water and acetone is different.
You could sit it on a stand alone heated bed.
@Jonathon_Thrumble yeah, I thought about it but the jar is to big to fit in my enclosed printer and I don’t have any spare heater
Just place it into a big bucket with hot water …
I’d be curious what the cycle time is for this once you use it for a while. (How long do you leave the part in there?)
@Peter_Bell i still need to do some testing to see what’s the best duration
