People sure like their 8020

No doubt. How were things built before 8020?

@Paul_Bohn
I made this out of almost all solid steel

I tapped just about every hole for every fastener too.

It’s got linear rails too!! Kudos, that’s a sweet looking CNC router.

@Paul_Frederick Neat lathe. I make most everything out of steel also.

@Paul_Bohn
Good old reliable mild steel. You know what you’re getting there. It’s easy to weld, and machines good too. Unlike aluminum. Well, I suppose aluminum machines easy enough. Stuff is garbage for making machines out of though.

Steel is a better material for the construction of the CNC. But you have to have oversell its processing.
Unfortunately I only have a miter, drill,small CNC machine (also from profiles). I have poor working conditions in the steel. This is why I prefer 8020

I plan to do a small lathe from 8020 and epoxy resin.

@Lukasz_Kazmierczak Unless you have a way of cutting, and drilling steel easily working with the material can be frustrating. I mainly use two machines.

A 4x6 horizontal/vertical bandsaw

And an RF-32 mill/drill.

That combination of machines along with some other miscellaneous tools makes working with steel fairly easy for me. I used to weld a lot of things I made but time taught me the error of that. Now I only weld sparingly and bolt most projects together.

@Lukasz_Kazmierczak Chop saw? And have you looked at openbuild’s stuff? I think they have the best drive mechanism I’ve seen.

Yes, chop saw with blade dedicated to aluminum cutting. I saw that, but for me this is much easier to use linear guides.
