My crankshaft had some minor scoring on the tail where the oil seal used to ride. The only local auto machine shop I could find didn’t want to work on it; they’re configured for American big block engine work. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Luckily, a couple of companies make very thin sleeves you can install to repair shaft defects (redi-sleeves, speedi-sleeves).

Most of these ship with a tool to drive them onto the shaft. The sleeve has a flared lip on one end, and the tool is just a cup that’s the right diameter to catch the lip so you can smack it with a hammer.

Since Federal Mogul’s sleeve misrepresents itself as compatible, I had to go with a Fel-Pro sleeve. Ineffably, Fel-Pro sells installation tools separately, and neither their parts catalog nor auto parts store staff nor any online resource listed the tool for my sleeve. :open_mouth: The lip is so small that you really need a tool that’s just the right diameter.

Screw it, that’s what 3D printing is for. A couple hours later I had a disposable tool that worked perfectly. I should’ve designed it to bottom out at exactly the right install depth, too!

funny or not funny haha

Nice job

Sweet!

Nicely done!

Oh yeah nice idea. Need that for my camshaft! Hope the seal comes tomorrow
