My first semi-successful ABS print!

I wouldn’t have gone for ABS with out a heated bed so soon had I not accidently ordered some instead of PLA. It took a while, but I finally got it to stick using yellow Frog Tape and hairspray. I think I’m printing too hot though, because the top section of the print wasn’t able to cool.

As I understand it active cooling is not a good idea with ABS. I tend to use cooling towers and just slow things down. Printing temperature for me is 235C. Impressive you’ve got stick down without a heated bed though.

@Richard_Mitchell It’s the hair spray that lets it stick. For a larger print, the curling of ABS would cause it to lift and probably fail.

A cooling fan or tower will be needed to keep those small layers from getting melty.

Huh… now I want to try ABS with my 1405 Simple!

Fans do OK for ABS in my experience if you don’t overuse them. You need front and back though. But I would play with the temp. See how low you can get and still extrude, and then come up as needed for good layer adhesion.

I use the extended Cool plugin for Skeinforge and enable the fan for layers taking less than 5 seconds. That’s the only time I use a fan with ABS.

I’ve used and with the 3ds cube 2. It too does not have a heated bed. The key is getting that first layer really flat and using something (like your hairspray method) to hold it down. The first layer will make or break your print!
