My led top hat, 468 apa102 LEDs in a 39x12 matrix.
It wouldn’t have been as easy without fastLed, so thank you for such an awesome library, and the code examples which I borrowed.

Chaka, excellent work! Did you use 60led/m strips and cut them down and splice them or did you use some flexible matrix product?
looks really awesome! How did you power this blicky hat?
It’s 60/m strip cut down and spliced together
For power, it’s currently running on 2 Lithium 18650s in parallel. I’m considering using one of the 3a portable battery chargers for when I take it out or just more 18650s. I’ll use FastLED’s brightness limiting methods if I do decide to go with the portable battery charger option.
I use those 18650 power banks and they’re awesome. Plugs right into the USB port on my Nano. Combined with the power management code of FastLED, I don’t have to worry about current draw.
Great job! Looks stupendous!
That looks super! Nice job.
Awesome job. I made a fedora style hat with 288 single-color leds (before I discovered WS2812s and FastLED). Those had to be multiplexed.
YOURS is WAY better and far more versatile. Nicely done!
Make sure you post the code somewhere!
Amazing Chaka, please do share the code, how did you manage to keep everything so black ?
just a WOW !
Very well done. Great job.
Thanks everyone, I will post the code once I’ve finished with it, I still need to add a few numbers and punctuation to the scrolling text abilities and I want it to be able to take a string input from my app, as the current strings are hard coded. There are a few other changes I’d like to make as well.
To keep it black and hide the LEDs it’s cover with a black material. The one I’ve found to let the most light through so far, is weed suppressant membrane similar to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weed-Control-Ground-Cover-Fabric-Membrane-8m-x-1-5m-Suppressant-Landscaping-/351338998598?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item51cd6fab46
I plan to take some LEDs to a fabric shop at some point and see if there is anything that will give a nicer finish to the hat, but for now it looks inconspicuous from a far, until you turn the lights on, which is what I wanted.
Thanks for the black fabric tip… I think I’ll be able to use that for an upcoming project. And again – that hat is awesome!
Hi Chaka, the hat Loo,S fantastic, can you share The code please ?
Kr, Rudy
I’ll likely share the code once I’m happy with it and feel it’s finished. Which it isn’t yet, haven’t had much time since starting a new job. So it might be a little while before I let it out, as there a few other projects a head of it.
A “head” of it… I see what you did there!
It’s been a few weeks very interested in checking out the code
