My question is not directly related to FastLED, but to the WS2812B.

I use serveral WS2812 or SK6812 strips or matrixes. The latest product I received, some 8x8 WS2812 matrixes show a strange power-on behaviour:

They are fully switched on. My other WS2812 don’t show this behaviour: They are off, the SK6812 seem to remember last state for a while.

So: Is anyone aware of this power-on behaviour? Are these matrixes cheap fakes? Has anyone heard of fake products?

I tried to tie VIN to GND or Vsupply, but this does not change the behaviour. The data sheet does not mention the power-on behaviour.

This behaviour is not only annoying, its also dangerous:

64 RGB-LED that are fully switched on consume that much current that the microcontroller (ESP8266) that controls them does not always start up at all (even with a 5V 6A(!!) supply), so the matrix stays on. This way it overheats quite quick…

(If I manage to send data to the matrix, it works fine - till reset…)

Possible clone. I some times get random pixels lighting up on poweruo so I usually shut off all pixels in the start of my setup code in the controller.

This has been posted many times here with many diferent chipsets of pixels. The consensus is that the quiality of strip/matrux is poor.
