@NathanielStenzel found a setting that’s not exposed via the classic interface which holds all posts for review. We’re turning on this setting due to the crazy amounts of porn spam this community has been receiving. If your post doesn’t show up immediately, we apologize but it’s a necessary evil for now.
Also, turns out we can ‘approve all posts from this person’, so it’s likely to stay on and posters whitelisted over time. Eventually nobody will even know the difference (hopefully)
I like that setup, over at openpnp Google group the logic is “manually approve first from all new users”
I would suspect that someone who has not yet posted should therefore make a post to be “approved all posts” or is it something that you can rummage through the membership and approve en masse? I’ll guess the former, as the latter might be composed of far too many real users.
“Eventually nobody will even know the difference”…except in the lack of spam. ROFL
If I recall correctly, a majority of the porn spam comes in between 8pm and 5am central time USA which is I think GMT-6 in the summer and GMT-5 in the winter. That means that it should be full by the time I wake up unless people from other countries or at least night workers here clear them out.
Y’know, if the community from all over the world tracked down spammers and started beating them to death with their own keyboards, this shit would end. We’d only have to kill a few before the rest took the hint… #justsaying
Sadly, we do not even know if it is real people making the posts. It could very well be hacked computers or other botspam.
@Patrick_Ryan it’s really illegal to hit 12 year old kids
There is a piece of spam in the spam section instead of the hold section right now. The spam was probably marked as spam by a normal member or auto-marked. The account is 4+ days old. It is luckily not porn. I figured I would make public note of this for feedback on the spam control method. It seems some spam does get through and some gets caught when you say “new members only”. Better is better though. I would say we made progress.
I am all for this, the spam was getting out of control. I suspect it is hacked accounts and bots both. is there a mechanism for a hacked account to be restored? sucks if a hack can force someone to abandon their online identity… seems like no one with power cares about hackers who dance around those with power and target the technically disadvantaged first. I bet if a Google executive was hacked they would care, which is why hackers probably avoid that
Thank you
I saw a few more thinks in the review folder and a few in the spam folder. I think we should take a poll in a few days to see how happy people are with our spam control.
Honestly, I think it works great how it is.
I find it hard to tell how good spam control is. Things often get seen by general users before mods see it.
