Need some help on my Printrbot Jr.

Need some help on my Printrbot Jr. My X Axis keeps shifting a few mm. I have tried tightening the belts as much as possible, but the problem persists… Any suggestions?

Try loosening them a bit, or turning up/down the stepper driver current. Can you move the x carriage freely without it snagging or catching anything?

Just tried turning up the current, I turned it down earlier to cool it down, will report back.

The motor they use for that is a surplus MBI part (they even have makerbot etched on the back) that is horribly-spec’ed for the job. The makerbots that used it frequently had the same problem. You can tweak the current and lubricate the bearings and probably get it to work, but you’ll eventually want to replace that motor. This one should work: http://shop.evilmadscientist.com/productsmenu/partsmenu/187-stepper

The Z-Motor is MakerBot, I beleive this is a WaiTai or something like that.

Ah, maybe they finally fixed it. Last I checked, they were using it for X and Z.

Would you still recommend an EMSL motor for my X axis?

The specs on the Z motor aren’t that important, but if you have any other MBI motors, you’ll want to replace them.

Would you replace the WaiTai with an EMSL motor if it was yours?

I don’t know the specs of the WaiTai (do you mean Wantai?) motor in question, but I can’t imagine it’s as poorly-spec’d as the MBI motors.

Yep, Wantai is the motor, as for specs it’s loud and hot!

Yeah, all the X motors that have ever shipped with the Jr are crap… even the “good” ones they sent me are about - although not quite - as bad as the MBI motors. The motors from Evil Mad are fantastic for that size - remember they have to be a shorter motor, which is hard to find in the <5v ~1A variety.

Just bought an EMSL motor, thanks for the help.

Also, It seems like my offset problem went away with a bit more current, although my heat problem is back…

Just received my new motor, will install and report back later. Thank you EVERYONE for the help!
