Next month there is going to be a local three day workshop featuring the LULZBOT KITTAZ. Part of the workshop includes one of these printers, but one of my interests is in miniatures and I would want to be able to print with clear detail on small figures.

Does anyone have experience with the LULZBOT KITTAZ or able to show any examples of just how fine/detailed this printer can print?

An FFF printer with a normal nozzle (0.35mm orifice) can print features about 0.8mm on the X and Y axis. For miniature figures, I would suggest a resin printer like mUVe 3D DLP, LittleRP, Droplit, b9 Creator, Form1, etc. You can more practically get finer detail and better surface finish with a resin printer.

I’m new to the hobby, and terrible with acronyms. What does FFF stand for?

Fused Filament Fabrication. Printers that use hotends and spools of filament. Even at their finest resolution, you don’t get much less than 0.1mm precision, realistically quite a bit more. Resin printers use UV light to cure liquid resin and so can generate finer features than filament printers.

Yeah, I had seen the LittleRP before and loved the look of the prints, but didn’t look into exactly how it worked before. Cool stuff.

yea if you want fine detail miniatures a resin printer is the way to go. The TAZ machines are great, but even the best FFF can only get so detailed.

It isn’t like I’m starting a miniatures business, so for my uses I may not need resin accuracy.

Even if you’re not doing it for money, I think you’ll find them nicer enough to be worthwhile. Maybe ask to have a sample miniature made from each machine type? Some of these resin machines are quite a bit cheaper than the KITTAZ machines too. The resin is more expensive, but you can still get a lot of miniatures from a liter of the resin.

Well, part of the issue is that the three day workshop is for the LULZBOT KITTAZ and out of nowhere both of my parents are suddenly entirely of the opinion that I should attend and apparently purchase one of these printers without either of them researching the topic first.

lol well congratulations on your new printer?

Ha I’m not that far yet. The workshop isn’t until November, but it is interesting seeing just how aggressive both parents are in trying to get me to sign up.
