Novice, crashed but not burned

Hello All,
My first venture with the Smoothieboard 4XC has crashed (but not burned…, at least there was no smoke). I hope someone can help.

I bought board about a year ago, have just completed a REPRAP type 3D printer and was looking forward to great progress over my Prusa 1 and Omni3D Architect.

I plugged the board into my laptop via USB and after bit of light flashing was awarded access to the SD card as predicted. Everything looked in order so I copied over the card contents and have these stored on my laptop. (Backup-Firmware; Documentation; Drivers; Models; Software; Source; config; etc including FIRMWARE.CUR,)

At that point, I decided that as the SD contents were a year old it would be a good idea to update. Following the instructions on (I think) GitHub I copied down what I thought was the latest firmware and copied it onto a new (FAT32) SD card. On trying to boot the board with this I got one red LED and the others solid greens. I also got the laptop message. “The USB device attached has malfunctioned”.

I then put the original SD card (still as supplied) back in the Smoothieboard but was welcomed by the same solid greens and “malfunction” message.

I guess I need to reinstall the Backup-Firmware from my copy of the supplied SD card. Is this what is required and how do I do this?

Thanks,

Bill Graham

It’s possible you downloaded the html file that points to the .bin file instead of the .bin file itself. What size does your .bin file have ?

Thanks or your speedy response, Arthur. You are quite correct………. I snipped out the script panel from the html file and renamed it firmware.bin then copied on to the new SDcard. It only dawned on me afterwards that it was a build sequence. D…………! So the .bin file must have loaded a load of rubbish. I have ordered a new 4XC board from Robotseed (for another machine) and this is already on its way to me. Can I just copy the (up to date) contents of the SD card from this newboard? If so, how do I update the firmware?. Alternatively, is there any way of reinstating the original firmware from the original SD card?

You just need to download the .bin correctly ( not it’s html ), and put the file named as “firmware.bin” on the SD card and reset, and that’s it.

Yesssssssssssss!

With the help of your pointers, I downloaded the latest fimware.bin and config files onto a new SD card…… then added the folders and other support files (without the FIRMWARE.CUR) to the card. Pressed the reset button, restarted a couple of times and there it all was flsashing happily and displaying in Windows again…… and updated.

Thanks a lot for the help…… very much appreciated.
